continue to… Bithumb, maybe, hacked

Hacking and theft with Bithumb confirmed. Losses are being counted …

Let me remind you that today the exchange announced the termination of taking deposits and withdrawal of funds due to anomalous activity on cold wallets.

According to Twitter user Dovey Wan, more than 3 million EOS were withdrawn from the wallet of the exchange (about $ 12.6 million at the current exchange rate). This information was confirmed by a security company responsible for auditing Bithumb accounts.

According to her, the theft of funds occurred after the private key to the Bithumb account was stolen in the EOS blockchain with the username g4ydomrxhege.

After that, the stolen EOS coins were obviously moved on the exchange: EXMO, Huobi, KuCoin, CoinSwitch, ChangeNOW, HitBTC and Changelly. Minor amounts were withdrawn on Binance and BW.

So that’s not all… During the investigation, Wan also discovered that the Bithumb XRP wallet was also hacked. 20 million XRP (about $ 6 million) were withdrawn from it.

Recall that the exchange Bithumb hack is not the first time. Last year, during a hacker attack, the exchange lost about $ 30 million; and it was possible to return only $ 14 million. In this regard, it is surprising that the exchange on one purse holds such a large amount of cryptocurrency that Wan also noted, commenting:

“I am surprised how the exchange could store a cryptocurrency in one purse for such a large amount …”, noting that Bithumb is the only large cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea that is not currently a banking partner.

It seems that after these events, Bithumb’s IPO in the United States remains a big question …
